Year 9 and 10 Science
By studying Science, ākonga are building our understanding of the world around them. This happens through collecting data, testing the data, look for patterns and developing ideas and theories based on the available data.
Science in Year 9 and 10 covers a wide range of aspects of Science. Science skills are developed across all of the courses, with emphasis in the compulsory Year 9 "Building Science Skills" course. These skills include: investigating, communicating, analysing and critiquing information in Science, using Science in everyday situations (Often called Science citizenship), understanding how ideas and theories are developed in Science and how to work both in a Science laboratory and out in the field.
The other Science courses are a mix of these skills, included in various Science contexts. The contexts include: Material world (Chemistry), Living World (Biology, Ecology), Physical World (Physics) and Earth and Beyond (Astronomy and Geology).
The college themes for 2025 of Wai and Migration are included in different ways throughout the Science courses.
In Year 9 & 10 Science ākonga need to choose a minimum of three courses over two years. In Year 9, ākonga must choose Building Science Skills.
