NCEA L2 Japanese follows and builds on the language learned in Year 11 Japanese. Having a solid background in learning Japanese is essential. Typically, you will have already completed Year 11 Japanese. Alternative entry by consultation with Mrs Gordon.

By studying NCEA L2 Japanese, You will build on knowledge gained in level one to extend your ability to communicate beyond basic ideas to express your thoughts and opinions, developing information shared by comparing and contrasting. This course is a prerequisite to NCEA L3 Japanese.
Level Two Japanese will challenge you to extend your understanding and communicative ability beyond level one’s totally familiar contexts by reading, writing, speaking and listening using a range of tasks and resources.
You will learn to communicate about your opinions and ideas and understand information about Daily Life in Japan, Traditional Foods & Customs, the Lifestyle of Young People.
The course will cover preparation and practice for the 5 Achievement Standard skills (3 internal, a total of 14 credits; and 2 external, a total of 10 credits).
You will use write-on workbooks, the Year 12 Japanese Class site, Education Perfect and other materials such as grammar practice worksheets online to ensure that you gain the language skills to be able to communicate using and comprehend NCEA L2 Japanese. We will also practice these skills using games and pair/group activities.
You will use Hiragana and Katakana phonetic scripts, revise NCEA L1 Kanji and learn NCEA L2 Kanji characters and grammar.
Students can gain up to 24 credits at level 2 NCEA. Note: Japanese is a university-approved subject if taken to the end of L3 NCEA.
Ākonga will cover 5 achievement standards - 3 internal and 2 external standards
Standard 91135 - Give a spoken presentation in Japanese that communicates information, ideas and opinions (internal)
Standard 91134 - Interact using spoken Japanese to share information and justify ideas and opinions in different situations (internal)
Standard 91137 - Write a variety of text types in Japanese to convey information, ideas, and opinions in genuine contexts (internal)
Standard 91133 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken Japanese texts on familiar matters (external)
Standard 91136 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of written and/or visual Japanese text(s) on familiar matters (external)
NCEA L2 Subject endorsement is available.
Write-on L2 Workbooks: “Homestay”, and “Eating & Drinking”, “Young People”; Education Perfect, the Year 12 Japanese Class site, flash cards for Kanji and vocab recognition.
