NCEA L3 Japanese follows and builds on the language learned in Year 11 & 12 Japanese. Having a solid background in learning Japanese is essential. Typically, you will have already successfully completed Year 12 Japanese. Alternative entry by consultation with Mrs Gordon.

By studying NCEA L3 Japanese, you will learn how to use Japanese language to explain and justify your own and evaluate the opinions of others giving reasons, explanations and examples to back these up.
NCEA Level Three Japanese will extend your ability to understand and communicate in Japanese beyond the comfort of familiar contexts. You will be challenged with a range of more complex tasks and “real life” language. You will be encouraged to question, compare and contrast, give advice and recommendations, and express your personal point of view and explore the views of others on a variety of topics.
You will learn to communicate about, evaluate and understand information about Japanese language and culture in the contexts of Geography, Tourism, Jobs and Famous People.
The course will cover preparation and practice for the 5 Achievement Standard skills (3 internal, a total of 14 credits; and 2 external, a total of 10 credits).
You will attend a compulsory hour-long Video Conference lesson once a week that will be taught by me, and hosted through the Kotuhi Ako Online Learning Network. The tasks set for completion before the following week’s lesson will be explained during each VC lesson, and your work will be set on the “This Week’s Work” page on the NCEA L3 Japanese class site.
Classwork will consist of write-on workbooks, the NCEA L3 Japanese Class site, Education Perfect and other materials such as online grammar practice worksheets to ensure that you gain the language skills to be able to communicate in and comprehend NCEA L3 Japanese. Regular communication with me in person or using email is a key aspect to enable me to support your learning.

You will read and write confidently using prior learning: Hiragana & Katakana phonetic scripts, NCEA L1 & 2 Kanji, and you will learn to use NCEA L3 Kanji characters, vocabulary and grammar to meet the NCEA L3 Japanese assessment requirements.
This course leads to entry to tertiary study, and travel or work opportunities in Japan.
Students can gain up to 24 credits at level 3 NCEA. Japanese is a university-approved subject at NCEA L3.
The course will cover up to 5 Achievement Standards (3 internal, a total of 14 credits, and 2 external, a total of 10 credits).
Ākonga will cover 3 internal and 2 external standards
Standard 91554 - Give a clear spoken presentation in Japanese that communicates a critical response (internal)
Standard 91555 - Interact clearly using spoken Japanese to explore and justify varied ideas and perspectives in different situations (internal)
Standard 91557 - Write a variety of text types in clear Japanese to explore and justify varied ideas and perspectives (internal)
Standard 91553 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended spoken Japanese texts (external)
Standard 91556 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended written and/or visual Japanese texts (external)
NCEA L3 Subject endorsement and UE (University Entrance) is available.
Write-on L3 Workbooks “Geography”, and “Tourism”, “Jobs” and “Famous People”, Education Perfect, the Year 13 Japanese Class site, flash cards for Kanji, interactive online games such as Kahoot, etc, will be done during our weekly VC lessons.
