Engineering Design is a skills based course. In Level 2 the course focuses on use of engineeering machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and drill presses, computer aided design and engineering drawings and workshop safety. It is a hands-on course that consists of one compulsory project, then ākonga have a choice of suitable projects. It is expected that ākonga taking EDS2 will have already had success in EDS1.

Level 2 Engineering Design gives ākonga an introduction to engineering machining and drawing. The skills learnt in the course will assist in many trades.
Level 2 Engineering Design covers reading engineering drawings and use of machine tools such as lathes, drill presses and milling machines. It also includes creating models and engineering drawings in an online CAD package.
Ākonga will use a range of skills to complete projects along with supporting bookwork. These projects and bookwork will be the evidence towards the standards being assessed.
Level 2 Engineering Design will be assessed through internal unit standards. These are;
Standard 21911 - Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures on engineering worksites (internal)
Standard 32051 - Demonstrate and apply knowledge of mechanical engineering drawings and geometric construction in MaPS environment (internal)
Standard 32053 - Demonstrate knowledge of and apply good work practices when performing machining operations in MaPS environment (internal)
Standard 2395 - Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the selection, use, and care of engineering hand tools (internal)
Nothing is required
