This course will help students to gain valuable skills for employment, vocational education and life beyond school, by studying a number of relevant core generic unit standards and being exposed to several different learning opportunities.

To help develop work-ready skills. Gateway students are able to have a work placement in an area of vocational interest. This will help them to build links to industry, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
Ākonga will learn many life skills which will be useful once they leave school.
Ākonga will learn skills related to planning for their future, driving a motor vehicle, first aid, health and safety, legal rights and responsibilities (in different contexts/situations), communication, interviews and financial literacy. Ākonga will also complete a Work Ready Passport.
Ākonga may have the opportunity to achieve credits related to their specific industry experience. This course is assessed internally, mainly using open-book assessments. Two unit standards offer merit and excellence opportunities.
