NCEA L1 Japanese follows and builds on the language learned in Year 9 & 10 Japanese. Having some background in learning Japanese is essential. Hopefully, you will have already completed Year 9 & 10 Japanese.

By studying NCEA L1 Japanese, you will be prepared to travel to Japan, to interact with Japanese visitors, to exchange personal information and make plans in the Japanese language. This course is a prerequisite to NCEA L2 Japanese.
Level One Japanese is designed to challenge, stimulate, and increase your communicative skills and understanding of the Japanese language using a variety of relevant “real life” tasks and activities.
You will learn to communicate about and understand information about familiar contexts, Times, Dates, Activities, Making Plans, Home and School.
The course will cover preparation and practice for the 4 Achievement Standard skills (2 internal, a total of 10 credits; and 2 external, a total of 10 credits).
You will use write-on workbooks, the Year 11 Japanese Class site, Education Perfect and other materials such as grammar practice worksheets to ensure that you gain the language skills to be able to communicate and comprehend NCEA L1 Japanese. We will also practice these skills using games and pair/group activities.
You will master Hiragana and Katakana phonetic scripts, and NCEA L1 Kanji characters.
Students can work towards up to 20 credits at level 1 NCEA. Japanese is a University Approved subject if taken at NCEA L3.
There are four Achievement Standards at NCEA L1 for Japanese:
Standard 91956 - Interact in spoken Japanese to share and respond to information, ideas, and opinions (internal)
Standard 91957 - Communicate in Japanese for a chosen purpose (internal)
Standard 91958 - Demonstrate understanding of written Japanese related to everyday contexts (external)
Standard 91959 - Demonstrate understanding of spoken Japanese related to everyday contexts (external)
Endorsement is available if students achieve a mix of internal and external standards.
