When does this course run: This course runs in either Semester 1 or 2 (ākonga can only choose one).
Year 9 Japanese is a half-year introductory course which requires no prior knowledge of the Japanese language. By the end of this course, ākonga will be confident in reading and writing Hiragana script, and some Kanji (e.g. Kanji numbers), and will be able to communicate in simple Japanese about personal information, and preferences.

Japanese culture is fascinating. Anime, online games, manga and so on, help ākonga learn a lot about Japanese culture, family life, and what it is like to be a young person in Japan. For New Zealanders, Japanese pronunciation is the same as Te Reo Māori, and the grammar is very straightforward compared to learning English as a second language.
Learning written Japanese script is like unlocking a secret code. Being able to communicate personal information with classmates or visitors and friends from Japan is exciting and rewarding.
Ākonga will be able to give and receive personal information about themselves and others in Japanese, including name, age, nationality, hometown, phone number, year level, likes and dislikes, family, favourite foods, sports, etc.
The knowledge and skills learnt in Year 9 are the basis for Year 10 Japanese, and further study at NCEA level.
Write on workbooks, Mirai 1 textbook, Education Perfect, Blooket, classroom games, and so on.
