In Year 11 ākonga are introduced to basic preparatory skills towards being in the outdoors. Ākonga also develop specific introductory skills related to tramping, camping, rock climbing, Orienteering and White Water Kayaking.

Outdoor Education at Otaki College will provide ākonga with unique experiences related to the outdoors. Skills learned in ODE1 are developed further in ODE2 and ODE3. Level 1 Outdoor Education is also a prerequisite towards Level 2 Outdoor Education.
Ākonga will learn basic skills:
Navigation; map and compass skills, location awareness.
Rock climbing; basic movement and technique
White Water Kayaking; basic paddle strokes and rescues.
Ākonga will complete both practical and theoretical coursework. Practical components require students to take part in 2 overnight trips, 2 afternoon climbing trips, 1 river afternoon and 1 afternoon dedicated to orienteering. Theoretical work requires ākonga to complete bookwork related to their practical experiences.
This course is assessed through Unit Standards. All afternoon/day trips and overnight experiences are compulsory and will assist ākonga in achieving.
Standard 20210 - Experience rock climbing (internal)
Standard 20152 - Experience and complete abseiling sessions (internal)
Standard 20818 - Demonstrate kayaking skills on sheltered or slow-moving water (internal)
Standard 425 - Experience day tramps (internal)
Standard 426 - Experience camping (internal)
Standard 20159 - Demonstrate knowledge of weather information for an outdoor (internal)
Standard 5479 - Complete white and yellow orienteering courses (internal)
Standard 32842 - Demonstrate personal awareness and positive behaviour during a group outdoor activity (internal)
Ākonga will only require their chromebooks during theoretical work.
