The objective of the course is to enable students to gain a University Entrance in Biology and up to 19 credits towards NCEA Level 3.

Biology enables students to make sense of the living world around them and in them. It can lead to many different career paths that impact upon society.
Ākonga will cover standards on Human evolution and cultural development, formation of species, how plants and animals respond to their environment, separate research topics on how organisms can maintain a stable internal environment and an issue of socio-scientific importance.
Ākonga will learn through both theory and practical components that contribute to each standard.
Ākonga The course is assessed with three external standards and two internal standards
Standard 91602 - Integrate biological knowledge to develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue (internal)
Standard 91604 - Demonstrate understanding of how an animal maintains a stable internal environment (internal)
Standard 91603 - Demonstrate understanding of the responses of plants and animals to their external environment (external)
Standard 91605 - Demonstrate understanding of the evolutionary processes leading to speciation (external)
Standard 91606 - Demonstrate understanding of trends in human evolution (external)
Ākonga are encouraged to purchase either the Scipad Level 3 workbooks or the Biozone Level 3 workbooks. Students will be told which workbooks will be used at the start of the year.
