When does this course run: This is a compulsory full-year course.
The Year 9 Mathematics course, while designed to develop and support the skills necessary for ākonga to meet the numeracy requirement of NCEA, also provides the opportunity for ākonga to extend their collaborative problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The individual needs of ākonga will be identified and addressed through PAT assessments - be they remedial assistance or extension opportunities.

Mathematics and statistics enable us to understand and predict the certainties and risks of the world we live in. There has never been a greater demand for mathematical skills which are required for a wide range of jobs and professions.
In Year 9 Mathematics ākonga will develop the resilience and perseverance necessary to extend their basic numeracy skills into problem solving scenarios as applied in real life situations. Ākonga will develop their fundamental statistics knowledge and expand upon their measurement, algebra, geometry and number knowledge. In this course ākonga will work through contextually rich problem solving activities designed to develop communication, collaboration and the creativity and critical thinking skills necessary in a 21st Century work environment. Much of the non problem-solving mahi in the course will be covered by bookwork.
Much of the content of this course is abstract and therefore difficult to put into specific contexts, however, through the measurement unit there will be a focus on and a lot of reference to different aspects of wai.
This course is designed to prepare ākonga for the numeracy requirement for NCEA which is sat in Year 10. The course also delivers the basic foundation (the building blocks) necessary to experience success in not just Mathematics through Years 10 to 13, but many of the other subjects available at school, like the Sciences, Social Sciences, pre-Trades and Engineering.
Ākonga would benefit from having the Walkermaths Numeracy Essentials workbook.
Calculators, chromebooks, rulers, pens and an exercise book are all necessary items for this course.
