Music provides ākonga the environment and opportunity to experiment, develop, and express their own artistic identity so they can flourish into creators, performers, and audiences of music.

Music is an art form that allows students to:
Develop confidence in their ability to express themselves in a creative context, either through live performance or composition.
Learn about music as a language with structures, symbols, and elements, and then see how they are used in other musical contexts.
Explore their creativity.
Develop a deeper understanding of themselves and enhance their personal wellbeing.
Ākonga will develop their knowledge of:
Performance
Composition
Arrangement
Aural and music harmony skills
All learning will be based around our Te Kawa o te Ako values, particularly Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, Pūkengatanga, and Whanaungatanga.
Ākonga will:
Perform as a soloist and as part of a group
Express their creativity through composing their own music or arranging an existing piece of music
Research a music topic and explore the different contexts around it
Develop their musicianship through aural and music harmony skills.
It is assumed ākonga will be willing and able to perform in a group or as a soloist. Ākonga should also be having a music lesson with one of the itinerant music teachers or a private teacher so they are able to have expert tuition on their instrument.
Ākonga will choose up to 4 standards to complete from the list below:
Standard AS91416 - Perform two programmes of music as a featured soloist (internal)
Standard AS91418 - Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing two substantial pieces of music as a member of a group (internal)
Standard AS91422 - Analyse a substantial music work (internal)
Standard AS91424 - Create two arrangements for an ensemble (internal)
Standard AS91425 - Research a music topic (internal)
Standard AS91849 - Compose three original songs that express imaginative thinking (internal)
Standard AS91421 - Demonstrate understanding of harmonic and tonal conventions in a range of music scores (external)
Standard AS91423 - Examine the influence of context on a substantial music work (external)
Endorsement is available if students achieve a mix of internal and external standards.
Laptop if using any music software that the college does not provide.
