Dive into GEO1, an exciting new course that will take you on a journey through the dynamic connections between people, place, and space. You'll study, develop, and apply invaluable geographic skills, helping you process information in a rapidly changing world. Combining aims, skills, ideas, and knowledge from Geography, Earth Science, and Sustainability, this well-rounded course stands alone or serves as an excellent introduction to studying sustainable futures.
In GEO1, we will tackle intriguing questions such as:
How can understanding spatial patterns help us make sense of why natural disasters occur in some places and not others?
Why are different types of environments found in some regions of Earth and not others?
How do diverse environments like rainforests, deserts, and polar ice caps form, and how might they fare in a warmer world caused by climate change?
How can we use data to better understand our effects on the natural environment and how it can affect us?
How can we use a Geographic framework to understand and respond to environmental challenges in our own backyard?
Join GEO1 and equip yourself with the knowledge and skills to navigate and influence the future, unlocking the secrets of our interconnected world.
The assessments are all Level 1 NCEA Achievement Standards: two internal and two external assessments, offering a total of 20 credits. Most internal assessments will be done in class, although there is opportunity for practical research.
Standard 91932 - Demonstrate understanding of the spatial distribution of phenomena and its impacts within te taiao/the environment (internal)
Standard 91933 - Explore te taiao/the environment using data (internal)
Standard 91934 - Demonstrate understanding of how natural processes operate within te taiao/the environment (external)
Standard 91935 - Demonstrate understanding of geographic decision-making in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific (external)
Endorsement is available if students achieve a mix of internal and external standards.
Ākonga should have:
1 x refill or 1 x 1B8 lined book, 1 x document wallet, pens / pencils, etc. This has a cost of $5 and can be purchased from the Student Centre. Students must also have their own chromebook, charger and a set of working headphones.
