Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe, te ao katoa
Artistic excellence makes the world sit up in wonder.
Music provides ākonga the environment and opportunity to experiment, develop, and express their own artistic identity so they can flourish into creators, performers, and audiences of music.

Music is an art form that allows students to:
Develop confidence in their ability to express themselves in a creative context, either through live performance or composition.
Learn about music as a language with structures, symbols, and elements, and then see how they are used in other musical contexts.
Explore their creativity.
Develop a deeper understanding of themselves and enhance their personal wellbeing.
Ākonga will learn to:
develop their performance skills in front of an audience
create their own music using music technology
develop their musicianship through aural and theory skills
explore how and why music is used in different contexts
All learning will be based around our Te Kawa o te Ako values, particularly Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, Pūkengatanga, and Whanaungatanga.
Ākonga will:
Learn a variety of music styles, including traditional and contemporary styles from Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider world.
Learn and demonstrate music skills including technical, theoretical, aural, and physical skills.
Develop and demonstrate performance skills as a soloist and in groups, which will need to be appropriate to the instrument, performance setting, and style. This could involve performances at the Variety Concert and Smokefreerockquest.
Create music ideas such as rhythms, melodies, riffs, patterns, chord progressions, lyrics: these ideas when developed will lead to an original piece of music that is created by the student.
It is assumed ākonga will be willing and able to perform in a group or as a soloist. Ākonga should also be having a music lesson with one of the itinerant music teachers or a private teacher so they are able to have expert tuition on their instrument.
Ākonga will be assessed on internal and external standards.
Standard AS91948 - Use music skills in a music style (internal)
Standard AS91949 - Demonstrate music performance skills (internal)
Standard AS91950 - Demonstrate understanding of music in relation to contexts (external)
Standard AS91951- Shape music ideas to create an original composition (external)
Endorsement is available if students achieve a mix of internal and external standards.
Laptop if using any music software that the college does not provide.
