In this course ākonga will learn the history, tikanga and kawa behind whakairo (Māori Wood Carving)

Toi Whakarākai is for students who have a keen eye for art and enjoy creating art and culture with chisels and their hands
Ākonga will learn to draw first and foremost and then basic but quality cuts using chisels. Ākonga will also learn how to care and maintain the chisels so that their work will be of a high quality. They will also learn how to 'read' the wood so as to get the best finish for their project.
Ākonga will learn:
A karakia to Tane Mahuta
The history or whakairo
To draw to the best of their ability
To carve using chisels and a wooden mallet
How to maintain a good edge on the chisels
How to read and understand the woodgrain
How to create a beautiful and traditional art form
The majority of this course is practically assessed. Students will need to keep up with their work and complete all the assessment pieces to gain the level 1, 2 & 3 credits that are available.
