Science is all around us. It is our way as humans that we try to make sense of everything. By studying Science ākonga increase the skills they need to determine what is accurate and what is not. As students increase their Science understanding they are more able to use that understanding to better interact with the world around us.
In level 1 Science ākonga will learn about the various investigative methods used in Science and the pros and cons of these methods. They will look at humans' impact on the environment, both negative and positive. Also, students will build their understanding of the foundation knowledge needed for studying the level 2 and 3 Sciences.
Ākonga will use a range of practicals, bookwork, worksheets, reports, data collection, videos and possibly outside speakers.
Ākonga are assessed through internal and external achievement standards. Ākonga select 4 to 5 standards from the list:
Standard 91920 - Demonstrate understanding of a science-informed response to a local issue (internal)
Standard 91921 - Demonstrate understanding of the use of a range of scientific investigative approaches in a context (internal)
Standard 92044 - Demonstrate understanding of human-induced change within the Earth system (internal)
Standard 92020 - Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between a microorganism and the environment (internal)
Standard 92021 - Demonstrate understanding of chemical reactions in context (internal)
Standard 92022 - Demonstrate understanding of genetic variation in relation to an identified characteristic (external)
Standard 92047 - Demonstrate understanding of a physical system using energy concepts (external)
Endorsement is available if students achieve a mix of internal and external standards.
Ākonga will have access to various workbooks are available in class and the Internet.
