This course is designed to support ākonga through the numeracy requirement for NCEA and to provide a pathway to a Level 2 Mathematics course. Ākonga will have the opportunity to gain 20 credits, 10 internally and 10 through the Numeracy Assessment.

To gain any form of NCEA Achievement, from Levels 1 to 3, ākonga MUST gain 10 Numeracy and 10 Literacy credits. If ākonga were unable to gain the Numeracy credits prior to being in Year 11 this course provides extra support to gain this requirement.
In the Level 1 Numeracy course ākonga will develop the resilience and perseverance necessary to transfer their basic mathematical skills into problem solving scenarios. They will also learn how these skills are applied in real life situations. Ākonga will supplement this learning by further developing their statistical investigation abilities and expanding their measurement, geometry and number knowledge.
In the Level 1 Numeracy course ākonga will predominantly work collaboratively during the statistical investigations unit while also developing higher level reporting and technical skills, particularly when it comes to analysing any data that is collected. Much of this work is done online. Ākonga will also learn to transfer the abstract learning that they do to more contextually rich scenarios. Much of the mahi in the course must be covered by bookwork.
Ākonga are assessed both internally and externally.
They will learn:
Standard 91944 Explore data using a statistical enquiry process (Internal 5 credits)
Standard 91945 Use mathematical methods to explore problems that relate to life in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific (Internal 5 credits)
Standard 32406 Apply mathematics and statistics in a range of everyday situations (External 10 credits)
There are two opportunities for Standard 32406. There are no endorsements available for this course.
Ākonga would benefit from having the Walkermaths 'Numeracy Workbook for basic skills'.
Calculators, chromebooks, rulers, pens and an exercise book are all necessary items for this course.
