Japanese culture is fascinating. Both ancient and modern Japanese culture is very different from any other. Learning about Japanese values and being able to negotiate meaning using Japanese will help ākonga understand more about their own culture. Japanese uses the same vowel sounds as Te Reo Māori. Japanese grammar rules are very simple and are always applied in the same way (almost without exceptions), unlike English grammar.
Ākonga will be able to read Hiragana, Katakana and some Kanji. Ākonga will learn how to communicate in written and spoken Japanese on topics of immediate relevance. Ākonga will be able to give, receive and react to information and descriptions about a variety of topics. Ākonga may be able to commence working towards NCEA Level One standards for 2026.
Topics studied may include: school teachers & subjects, family & pets, clothing, making requests and giving instructions, food & drink, shopping, numbers, time and activities, stating opinions, preferences and making comparisons.
Completion of Year 10 Japanese is a prerequisite to entry into NCEA Level 1 Japanese.
Write on workbooks, Mirai textbook, Education Perfect, Blooket, classroom games e.g. Bingo, and so on.
