Mathematics and statistics enable us to understand and predict the certainties and risks of the world we live in. There has never been a greater demand for mathematical skills which are required for a wide range of jobs and professions.
If ākonga have a passion for Mathematics and Problem Solving, want to participate in competitions or just want to develop higher level mathematical skills and techniques than are covered in your classroom, then this is the course for you.
In the Mathematics extension course, ākonga will develop the resilience and perseverance necessary to extend their high-level mathematical skills into problem-solving scenarios as applied in real-life situations.
In this course, ākonga will work through contextually rich problem-solving activities designed to develop communication, collaboration and the creativity and critical thinking skills necessary in a 21st Century work environment. This will enable them to participate with confidence in:
Problem Challenge (Year 7 and 8)
Junior Mathematics Competition (Years 7 - 10)
AMC (all year levels)
Kiwi Maths (Year 9 - 11)
Mathswell (all year levels)
NZPMC (Year 9 - 13)
NZAMT projects
This will lead to developing the skills necessary to eventually participate in the Senior Mathematics Competition (Year 11 - 13) and ultimately the NZMO (the NZ Maths Oympiad). Similarly, ākonga may choose to do NCEA level work beyond their Year level. This will also be accommodated.
The context of the course will be varied depending on the requirements and aspirations of each individual ākonga.
While this course is designed to extend Mathematics in an environment with like-minded people, it could lead to representing NZ at the Maths Olympiad or doing University Mathematics papers while still at school or completing your Mathematics journey early. There are no boundaries.
Due to the flexibility of the course materials will be provided.
