Physics is the science of matter and energy and the interaction between the two. In Level 3 Physics we build on our studies of moving objects, gravity, electricity, light and waves and how these apply to modern life. The concepts include fields, systems, change, conservation, the atom, waves and force interactions. It is a prerequisite that ākonga have had success in both Level 2 physics and mathematics.

Physics is the science of the physical world we live in, from the subatomic scale to the galactic scale. Physics can lead into further study or careers in numerous trades, the defense force, forensic science, biotechnology, sports medicine, astrophysics, engineering and biophysics.
Level 3 Physics covers motion, force, energy changes, momentum, light and waves, electricity, electromagnetism, atomic physics and practical investigation techniques.
Ākonga will use a range of practicals, bookwork, report writing, data collection, videos and demonstrations.
Level 3 Physics will be assessed through both internal and external assessments. It is expected that there will be 7 internal credits and 12 external credits available through;
Standard 91525 - Demonstrate understanding of Modern Physics (internal)
Standard 91521 - Carry out a practical investigation to test a physics theory relating two variables in a non-linear relationship (internal)
Standard 91524 - Demonstrate understanding of mechanical systems (external)
Standard 91523 - Demonstrate understanding of wave systems (external)
Also, for those students interested and if time permits, the following may be offered;
Standard 91526 - Demonstrate understanding of electrical systems (external)
Standard 91527 - Use physics knowledge to develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue (internal)
Endorsement is available if Ākonga achieve a mix of internal and external standards.
