Dear BRMS Families:

We hope you had a relaxing four day weekend with your families and friends.  Our students returned to school a little sleepy and tired, but are gearing up for their first full week of school starting on Sept. 14th!

Next week we will be starting our student advisory groups known as NEST.  Students are placed into multi grade level groups with an advisor that they will have for their 4 year experience at BRMS.  Our groups meet weekly on Wednesday mornings from 8:00-8:25.  Each week our advisory groups are focusing on the same topic.  This month we will be focusing on welcoming our new students, and making them feel welcome in their new school.  NEST is a time for the authentic relationship and community building that students need to feel safe and supported in their schools. 

Our fall sports program is in full swing and our athletes are looking forward to getting out and competing against other schools this week. 

Be sure to check out our athletic schedule for a list of competitions and we look forward to seeing you out on the athletic fields this fall as we cheer for our Raiders!

Hello Spanish Immersion Students & Families:

My name is Gabriel Ely, but students call me Profe. I’m excited to be returning to BRMS to teach full-time this year. If your student is taking Spanish Immersion this year, they have class with me three days a week! This year, all Spanish immersion classes will be reading and writing in ways that connect to their ELA class content so that they can work on developing the same proficiencies across languages.

In our first unit, across grades, we will be reading and listening to texts that deepen our understanding of what it means to be bilingual and to be members of a bilingual community, Then we will use what we have learned about bilingualism and ourselves to create class language pledges to commit to use and notice Spanish in our classes and communities.

Throughout the year, we will be exploring authentic texts (written in Spanish for native speakers) to help us understand literary elements, and working to improve the organization and creative features of our writing. As we work on those learning objectives, which parallel grade-level ELA benchmarks, we will also focus on linguistic and cultural features that will help us build the skills and understandings that students in Spanish Immersion need to transition smoothly into Spanish as a World Language classes at MMU.

Students will need a single subject spiral-bound notebook that they can keep in the classroom. If you have one you can send your student to class with, that would be fantastic. If not, the school can provide one.

Hola, estudiantes y familias del programa de inmersión en español:

Me llamo Gabriel Ely, pero los estudiantes me llaman "Profe". Estoy emocionade de regresar a BRMS para enseñar a tiempo completo este año. Si su estudiante participa en el programa de inmersión en español este año, ¡tendrá clase conmigo tres días a la semana! Este año, en todas las clases de inmersión, leeremos y escribiremos de manera que se conecten con los contenidos de la clase de lengua y literatura inglesa (ELA), para que puedan desarrollar las mismas competencias en ambos idiomas.

En nuestra primera unidad, y en todos los niveles, leeremos y escucharemos textos que profundizan nuestra comprensión sobre lo que significa ser bilingüe y formar parte de una comunidad bilingüe. Luego, utilizaremos lo aprendido sobre el bilingüismo y sobre nosotros mismos para crear compromisos lingüísticos de clase, con la promesa de usar y notar el español en nuestras aulas y en nuestras comunidades.

Durante todo el año, exploraremos textos auténticos (escritos en español para hablantes nativos) que nos ayudarán a comprender los elementos literarios, y trabajaremos para mejorar la organización y los aspectos creativos de nuestra escritura. Al trabajar en estos objetivos de aprendizaje —que se corresponden con los estándares de ELA de cada nivel de grado—, también nos centraremos en aspectos lingüísticos y culturales que ayudarán a desarrollar las habilidades y conocimientos necesarios para que los estudiantes de inmersión estén preparados para cursar las clases de español como lengua mundial en MMU.

Los estudiantes necesitan un cuaderno de espiral de una sola materia que puedan dejar en el salón de clases. Si tiene uno que pueda enviar con su hijo a clase, sería fantástico. Si no, la escuela puede proporcionarle uno.

Note from the P.E. Classroom- 

Mr. Lennon and Mr. Hight are excited for another fun year with our Phys. Ed Students! Our first units of the year will be soccer with 5th and 6th grade. And Flag Football / Throwing and Catching skills with 7th and 8th grade. We will be pausing the units for a week from Sept. 8-11 when we will have the Local Motion bike trailer at BRMS! Some students are familiar with this program from elementary school. You can find more info about Local Motion on their website

We will have enough bikes and helmets for every student in P.E. but students are welcome to bring their own bikes and helmets. Bikes can be stored on the front bike rack or they can be locked to the back fence by the athletic fields if the bike rack is full. It is recommended that students only bring their bike on their P.E. days and not leave their bikes at the school overnight. If your child does not know how to ride a bike, we have a plan for other activities during these classes, but we are also happy to teach kids how to ride safely! Over the years we have taught many kids how to ride when we have had the LM trailer at our school.
