RIVER RAIDER

Team Endurance at Leddy Arena

Dear BRMS Families,

Over the past couple of weeks, the BRMS Community Service Club has been collecting food items to help support the EJU Food Distribution Center. On Thursday afternoon, our students delivered 4 carloads of 1806 items to this vital community program! We are proud of the efforts of our Community Service Club and the students who brought in an abundance of food to keep our community well fed during the winter months. I want to thank all of our families who helped with the donations as well during this food drive.

Our students had a busy week at BRMS over the last couple of days. We had four in school music concerts for our students and faculty, several after school clubs, and eight basketball games against Shelburne and Camels Hump. We are excited to be able to offer these opportunities despite the increased number of COVID cases in the state of Vermont. Our hope is to continue offering all of these great options when we return from break in January. The increased vaccination rates of our student population and the test to stay program will be the key methods to keep our students in school and active. We are encouraging families to get vaccinated as soon as possible and we encourage everyone to follow all department of health guidelines over the break to reduce the amount of viral transmission when we return in January.

There will not be a River Raider sent out next week before the holidays. Have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing you next year!

From the Nurses Office:

The BRMS Nurses want to celebrate and thank all families for supporting the safety of our school community by keeping their child home when symptomatic. Here is a friendly reminder regarding a safe return to school after illness from our health office:

  • When reporting an absence, please email attendance pam.preston@mmuusd.org or call 802-899-3711. If the absence is due to illness and/or symptoms, include BRMSnurse@mmuusd.org.

  • If your child is exhibiting any of the COVID19 symptoms for longer than 24 hours, we recommend they get a COVID19 PCR test as soon as possible.

  • If your child experiences allergy symptoms that are not resolved with their daily allergy medication, COVID19 PCR tests are recommended during this time of increased circulation of the COVID19 virus.

  • Your child is cleared to safely return to school when:

    • They have received a negative PCR test result or received an alternative diagnosis by their health care provider (please send results or MD note to BRMSnurse@mmuusd.org), AND

    • It has been 24 hours or more of no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, AND

    • Other symptoms have improved

Save the Dates - Discover Engineering!

The Vermont 4-H Program and the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) have teamed up to host a variety of programs the entire month of February 2022 to promote the field of engineering. Our goal is to expose youth to engineering, build skills and help youth understand different pathways they can take to pursue a future as an engineer.

Check out all of the different FREE learning opportunities happening during the month – all leading up to National Engineering Week, February 20-26, 2022. (See attached flyer)

Activities include:

  • Create Your Own Invention Contest (grades 3-12), entries due February 19

  • Rube Goldberg Challenge (grades 3-12), entries due February 19

  • 4-H World Changers: Learn to Code (grades 5-12), starts February 3

  • VTeen 4-H Science Pathways Cafes (grades 7-12), in-person February 5, virtual February 22 (engineering focus)

  • 4-H@Home Engineering Activities, new activity shared each Monday in February

And, don't miss our hallmark event DISCOVER ENGINEERING on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the UVM Davis Center and other campus locations. This event is for youth in grades 5-12 and will have two distinct parts:

  • In the morning youth participants will engage in an Engineering Scavenger Hunt. We have invited engineering businesses and CEMS student groups to host exhibit tables to share their work and engineering expertise. Each exhibitor will submit a question to include in the scavenger hunt; the answer to these questions can be discovered by visiting the exhibit tables. Collectively, this allows youth to learn about different kinds of engineering and career pathways. There will also be a robotics demonstration by some of the FIRST Robotics teams.

  • In the afternoon participants will continue to connect with engineering professionals and UVM engineering students through hands-on skill-building workshops.

We hope you will encourage your students to participate in some of the programs and activities!

Please reach out with any questions. More details and registrations will be available right after the New Year.
