RIVER RAIDER
Dear BRMS Families:
The first trimester report cards for our students were mailed home this afternoon. Please take some time to go over this information with your child. We encourage families to talk about the positive aspects of the information that has been shared with you in this document. We recognize that all of our students are at different developmental stages in their middle school lives and that it is important to focus on the things that are going well in school.
We also encourage families to talk about some possible goals for the next trimester and to touch base with your child throughout this time period on how they are progressing. As you may recall, this past spring your child took the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment (VTCAP) for the first time. This exam replaced both the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) and the Vermont Science Assessment. Included with this letter are the VTCAP assessment results for your child. Your child’s results will be found in the envelope mailed home today along with the first trimester report card.
It is important to recognize that these assessments are only one way of showing your student's accomplishments. These scores represent how your student performed on the day of testing. If tested on a different day, they might get a slightly different score. The goal of the test is to assess our school’s performance: that is, our success in teaching your child. Again, the VTCAP is only one way to measure your child’s learning.
A few notes about the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP):
VTCAP has a unique scale score range. The lowest possible score is 1500 and the highest possible score is 2000.
VTCAP results are not directly comparable to Smarter Balanced (SBAC) results. The State is working on a method to compare this year's results with prior years. This will be available later this year.
While the results for your student(s) are accurate, the statewide and district results you will see on the report card are not yet official. The State will release official statewide results later in the year.
State and district-level results currently do not include results from the VTCAP Alternate Assessment. Those results will be included in the official results released later this year.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me or your child’s teacher
Have a great weekend!
