Dear BRMS Families,
Last night we held our first public musical concert since January of 2020. With over two years of waiting for this day, the families and friends of our 5th and 6th grade students packed the gymnasium with several hundred in attendance. Our musicians and their directors, Berta Frank and Victoria Rosales, did not disappoint as they performed magnificently for 90 minutes! The energy in our building was electric and the unmasked smiles of all involved was more contagious than the COVID virus!!!! Next week will be our 7th and 8th grade student concert and we are looking forward to the talent they will display for our community. Please be sure to join us on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:00 to support all of the hard work and dedication they have committed to their craft.
Our students will be completing their SBAC testing in the month of May. 5th and 8th grade students will be participating in the science assessment next week. 6th and 7th grade students do not take the science assessment. 5th and 6th grade students will be taking the ELA and Math assessments the week of May 9th. 7th and 8th grade students will be testing during the week of May 16. These tests provide us with important information about how we are doing as a school and provide us with a “snapshot” of how individual students are performing at a particular moment in time. Please remind your child to try their best, but also encourage them to not overly worry about the results. We look at the many more assessments and classwork samples to determine the overall performance of our students. This test only helps to assess a very small part of student academic performance while they are at BRMS.
Saving the best for last….we will be holding our first 7/8th grade dance on May 13th from 7-9:00 p.m. This is a change from our originally planned date due to a schedule conflict with a baseball game under the lights in Essex. You will find the student expectations for the dance in this edition of the River Raider. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with these rules and take a minute to review them with your child.
Have a great weekend and hopefully the warmer temperatures will arrive in May!

Guidelines for School Dances
Approximately four times per year there is a school dance for our seventh and eighth grade students. The dances begin at 7:00pm and end at 9:00pm. Students are responsible for arranging a ride home at 9:00pm. The chaperones for the dance consist of administrators, faculty, and/or parents. Any student who cannot or will not follow the guidelines will be asked to leave and parents will be notified to come pick them up.
All BRMS school rules are in effect at school dances.
Students are to remain in the designated area from the time of arrival until the end of the dance. Students must have written parental permission to leave the dance early or be picked up at the door.
Only BRMS seventh and eighth graders may attend school dances.
No students will be admitted into the dance after 8:00pm except those accompanied by a parent.
Dance styles deemed unacceptable by chaperones for reasons of safety will not be permitted.
Students who did not attend school on the day of the dance are not allowed to attend.
All BRMS school rules are in effect at school dances.
Dances held in the Dining Hall require students to wear rubber soled shoes or sneakers.

To our BRMS parents and guardians.
May is Mental Health Awareness month and we want to share some valuable resources with you. Intentional self-poisoning is one of the most common methods of suicide attempt. Incidences among young people have been on the rise over the past decade, representing a growing issue in Vermont and across the county. The following information can help you start the conversation with your children to assess risks for self harm and educate them about medication safety. Please join our efforts to prevent intentional self-poisoning among our Vermont youth.
Thank you.
