RIVER RAIDER

Team Momentum at Smuggler's Notch

Dear BRMS Families

This morning  all 7th and 8th grade students  from BRMS and CHMS attended a powerful presentation at MMU  focusing on positive life choices, mental health and addiction.   Our students heard about Stephen Hill’s  inspiring comeback story from addiction.  He is the founder of Speak Sobriety, a young person in recovery, bestselling author, wellness coach, and an attorney. He has presented in front of thousands of people for over 500 schools and coalitions across the country.   Our students listened intently as Stephen spoke about his life and the impact his addiction had on himself and the people in his life. Please take a moment to talk to your child about their experiences and what they may have learned from the presentation.

We are quickly approaching the Halloween season at BRMS and with that comes questions about the appropriateness of this event as it relates to our school.   Although we do not forbid  students from dressing up for Halloween we do not encourage the use of Halloween costumes at school.  If students decide to dress up for the day, there will be no preparation such as hair coloring, getting into costumes in the restrooms or at school.  All preparation must be done prior to school.   Costumes should not be a distraction from the educational environment and they should be culturally sensitive to the diversity of our community.    Our ABAR committee created a Google Presentation addressing the concerns and we shared this with our students this week.   We want our students to have fun enjoying traditions while at the same time not losing focus of the school day and being sensitive and inclusive to our entire community.   Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Have a great weekend!

Kevin
