RIVER RAIDER

Dear BRMS Families,

The hotter than normal temperatures made for long school days this week!   Despite the hot weather, our staff and students were able to find ways to keep cool while getting into the flow of the new school year.   Many of our athletic practices were canceled as well, but we are looking forward to starting our games next week.   We have a high number of students participating in our teams, and we are excited to see them out on the field displaying all of their talents.   Be sure to check out the athletics page for the BRMS game schedule.

Wednesday, September 13th will be our first early release day of the school year.  All students will be dismissed two hours early at 12:40.   All of our dismissal routines will be the same as normal school days.   Please refer to the school year calendar for all other early release dates this year.

We will also be starting our school wide Advisory Groups on Wednesday.   Our Advisory program is known as NEST.   Each week our multi grade level NEST groups will meet as a way to build a healthier community.   This year we will be working with the Vermont Council on the Arts and artist in residence to focus on what it means to belong to a community.   We will provide regular information about the NEST activities in the River Raider.

NEST Vision and Goal

Vision Statement:  To achieve a more cohesive and equitable school community for all students.

Goal: To create fifth through eighth grade advisory groups that recover and reconnect our whole school community at BRMS. We aim to create and sustain lasting relationships with our students while they are with us over the time span of four years. Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards will guide our work in empowering students to amplify their voice, develop their identity, and build community through advisory groups and activities.

Rationale: When properly facilitated, an advisory period can be a time for the authentic relationship and community building that students need to feel safe and supported in their schools. School must be relevant and engaging to adolescents before they will make an effort to do what schools ask of them. (Learning for Justice) “A homeroom or advisory at the start of the day, when properly structured to meet adolescent needs, can promote social development, assist students in their academic programs, facilitate positive involvement among teachers, administrators, and students, and provide adult advocacy and a positive climate in the school community” (Middle Grades Research Journal, Fall 2011, page 148).
