Spirit Week at BRMS!
Comfy day
Twin day
Dress like another generation day
Dear BRMS Families,
April Break has arrived! Hopefully we will have some sunshine and warmer weather over the next nine days! There will only be seven more weeks of school when we return on April 25th.
We look forward to an exciting end of the school year and the return of many of our spring traditions.
We hope you have a safe and happy break with your children!

Browns River 8th Grader Qualifies for National Math Tournament
This school year, a lively group of Browns River student “mathletes” met weekly after school, November through February, to play games and solve tough math problems. The BRMS MathClub is a member of the National MathCounts Program and is eligible to send 4 students through the Competition Series. Henry Rogers (8th grade), Eli Wimette (8th grade), Micah Foster (7th Grade) and Seamus Dumas (7th Grade) competed individually and as a “virtual” team in the Northwest Vermont Chapter Competition in February. Three students’ scores moved them on to the state competition held in March. The state competition was also virtual, but the BRMS mathletes met “in-person” in Coach McDevitt’s classroom. After a hearty meal of Mountain High Pizza Pie, the students worked for approximately 2 hours on 2 plates of cookies and 40 problems like the ones below.
“The number a is 5 times as large as b. The sum of a and b is 15. What is the value of the product ab?
Express your answer as a common fraction.
“A nonzero number of goats, each with four legs, and a nonzero number of chickens, each with two
legs, are living on a farm. Between all the animals, there are 3/8 as many heads as there are legs.
Assuming that all animals have all of their limbs, what is the fewest possible number of chickens on the farm?”
Congratulations to Henry Rogers who placed 2nd in the State and will represent Vermont at the National Competition, May 7th-10th. This is NOT virtual and the MathCounts organization is flying Henry and 3 other Vermont Mathletes to Washington D.C. where they will stay and dine at the Renaissance Hotel while practicing and competing. Good Luck, Henry !! (Answer to the questions above are 125/4, and 2 chickens).

So proud of our librarian Nicole Thompson! Nicole has been nominated for the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year award for the junior division of the National History Day (NHD) National Contest. The award is sponsored by Patricia Behring in recognition of the pivotal role teachers play in the lives of students.
Each of the 58 National History Day affiliates may nominate one high school and one middle school teacher for this award. Every nominee for the $10,000 award is a teacher who demonstrates a commitment to engaging students in historical learning through the innovative use of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest. All nominees will receive $500 as a result of their nominations.
“This award recognizes the very best educators from across the nation and beyond,” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “These educators are leaders and innovators in the teaching of history, and we are all the more impressed because of the extended difficult teaching circumstances due to the pandemic during the last year...”
The national winner will be selected by a committee of experienced teachers and historians, and announced on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the National History Day National Contest Awards Ceremony to be held virtually due to COVID-19. Nominees’ work must clearly illustrate the development and use of creative teaching methods that engage students in history, and help them make exciting discoveries about the past.

Help Kids Navigate Viral Social Media Stunts
Fads are nothing new. We see a lot of people wearing, doing, or saying something, and we want to try it, too. Today, fads on social media can take the form of viral stunts captured on video. And since kids are sensitive to peer pressure and FOMO (fear of missing out), they're often the first to want to try them.
These stunts, also called "challenges," range from harmless to horrifying. They can be silly, slightly risky, destructive, or even dangerous. In most cases, kids just watch them for entertainment on platforms like TikTok or YouTube. But sometimes, kids are inspired to try them out and share their own videos of the results.
If you're looking for advice on talking to your kid about the latest social media challenge, check out these tips and conversation starters.
