Do you read books? More specifically, romance books? If the answer was yes to either of these questions, then I recommend you read Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter! This young-adult book is suitable for any middle-schooler (although a slight language warning…). Better Than the Movies is an enemies-to-lovers rom-com-styled book. The book follows 17-year-old Liz Buxbaum, a heartfelt romance enjoyer. She’s desperate to catch up (and grab the attention) of her forever crush, Michael, who recently returned home seven years after moving away. But, to do this, she needs to enlist her more popular (and more annoying) next-door neighbor, Wes. He reluctantly agrees, and he begins taking her to social events in hope of grabbing Michael’s attention. However, whilst she schemes with her new partner, she starts to create a connection far deeper with Wes than Michael. But does she realize it in time? Can Liz figure out who’s meant for her before it’s too late? Find out in Better than the Movies by Lynn Painter.
Now, here’s a (non-spoiler) review. In my opinion, for a romance book, this was very good. It was filled with Taylor Swift references, hilarious lines, and pages that made me smile. For some, it might be seen as corny: which is okay! I think if you’ve ever encountered a romance book, you probably won’t cringe. (But I can’t say the same for someone who hasn’t.) I liked this book because it features great character development for two of our main characters. Also, it’s just truly an enticing romance book. The plot is interesting, the dialogue is well-written, and even the romantic scenes remain entertaining. So, if you’re looking for a new book to read, I highly recommend you read this book.
