Kenya, frequently referred to as “The Jewel of East Africa” for its magnificent beaches and lush highlands, is rich with vibrant culture, art, music, and breathtaking landscapes. Adjacent to the Indian Ocean and bordering five countries (South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda), Kenya is famous for its savannas, diverse wildlife, and rich tribal heritage.
Among the many natural beauties of Kenya, The Maasai Mara National Reserve is arguably the most highly revered. Located in southwest Kenya, the reserve is a world-renowned wildlife conservation haven. Herds of wildebeest, giraffes, and elephants roam freely while predators like lions and cheetahs search for prey. This has resulted in a unique ecosystem, having interested nature enthusiasts from all around the world for centuries. In recent years, the reserve has been voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
Beyond the savannas, Kenya is also home to jagged mountains, like Mount Kenya, the second-highest peak in Africa. It offers a challenging ascent for those seeking the thrill of conquering its heights. If you’re lucky, you might just encounter sunni buck and/or albino zebra, both of which are endangered species that reside on this mountain.
Kenya's rich culture is made up of more than 40 distinct ethnic groups. Known for their vibrant beadwork and ceremonial traditions like the “high jumping dance," the Maasai tribe are perhaps the most recognizable tribe. Beadwork is a very versatile art, and the Maasai typically create jewelry that can be used to express their social status, age, and the marking of special occasions like engagement. On the day of a woman’s wedding, she will receive a wide collar necklace, crafted by her mother; the previously mentioned “high jumping dance” will also be performed, proving strength and maturity. The Maasai inhabit parts of northern, southern, and central Kenya.
Kenyan cuisine blends traditional African flavors with influence from other countries, surprisingly including India! Kenyan chapati, a delectable flaky flatbread, is very similar to that of paratha, an Indian flatbread. There are many other similarities between these two cuisines, including usage of spices, grilling techniques, and even the usage of coconut water! Ugali, a thick cornmeal porridge, and sukuma wiki, a dish made from kale or collard greens, are also both staples in Kenyan cuisine. One dish that sounded particularly appetizing to me upon my research is called nyama choma. Meaning “grilled meat” in Swahili, it is most commonly made with goat meat, beef or lamb. This delight is frequently served with different sauces like Choma sauce, barbecue sauce, mint sauce and much more. These scrumptious sounding dishes are said to be best enjoyed with a cup of Kenyan tea or a glass of mango juice.
