When you think of New Year’s, what do you imagine? Fireworks? Big dinners? Staying up way past your bedtime? Everyone has a different way of celebrating the beginning of a new year. Some common ways to celebrate are meeting up with friends and family, attending parties, and staying up until midnight to observe the exact moment of the new year.
We asked Lakeside students how they celebrated, and their answers did not disappoint. The most popular things that our students and their families like to do on New Year’s Eve are counting down until midnight with friends, throwing a big party, and going totally crazy when it turns 12:00 am. Others like to watch the ball drop, a widespread tradition that takes place in Times Square, New York City. It involves a giant crystal ball being lowered to mark the exact second of the turning of the new year.
Many students also have traditions that are a little more unique. For example, one student’s ritual is eating one round fruit for each month, and making a wish for every one. Another tradition is to go to the mountains to ski and play in the snow on New Year’s Day. Simply eating home-cooked meals is also popular, and a great way to spend quality time with family and friends.
Do you want to learn some interesting new ways to celebrate the new year? One fun way to celebrate is wearing polka-dot dresses, a tradition popular in the Philippines, or trying to stack 12 pancakes on top of each other, (mission impossible?) which is a great tradition from France. Any way you celebrate, spending time with family or friends or both, I hope you have a great new year! 🎉
