It’s finally here! After waiting 25 years, the Major League Soccer team Seattle Sounders have finally released a new logo. They unveiled it right before the team’s 50th anniversary. The logo features a “Pacific Blue” silhouette of a modern Space Needle inside a “Rave Green” shield with blue borders. The shield is outlined in a new color, Heritage Aqua. Inside the shield on the left is the number seven. On the right, there is the number four. These numbers represent 1974, the year the Sounders were founded.
The design has a bold text spelling out “Seattle Sounders,” with a wavy line “Sounders.” Additional logos include an orca, a soccer ball, and a teal carnation. The carnation is part of a Sounders tradition where players hand out carnations to fans.
The Seattle Sounders say the new logo is “A striking new crest and associated marks alongside a refreshed color.” The new logo, similar to many logo redesigns, is a simplified form of the old one.The team took away the Seattle Sounders wordmark on the main logo and replaced the old color scheme with a new blend of colors. The Sounders also stated that the logo takes an elegant but classic approach. However, the logo does still show some hints of its pasdesign wordmark, the number 1974.
The Sounders surveyed season ticket holders, fans, the team and others to find out what they want to be represented in the new logo. With many hours and over 10,000 surveys completed, the Sounders concluded that fans wanted to see water, waves, and orcas. Two out of three appeared in the logo.
I interviewed some people around the Leo and the results were very surprising. 79 percent responded that they didn’t like the new logo. Yusuf U. from 6th grade replied, “The original logo was so much better. The new one looks like it was made in the 1800s.” Mahima K., also from sixth grade, called it ”(it is) aesthetically distressing.”
In my opinion, the colors seem too bright and old-fashioned, but I like the new font. There were also many good comments about the logo. Press C. from fifth grade said, “It is good but hard to get used to.”
Overall, the new logo is a refreshed version of the one before. It marks a new era for the Sounders and points to a bright future for the club.
