The Boys High School Swim and Dive Team did incredibly well at the AAA State Swimming Championships, taking home second place out of all the schools. Even though Lakeside is one of the smallest AAA schools, we were able to send two swimmers to most of the championship finals, which means that two of our swimmers finished in the top eight in most events. With only twelve swimmers, being able to finish in 2nd is a huge accomplishment! The team consisted of Jerry C., Andy H., Ulee K., Daniel L., Harrison L., Abel M., Ben S., Ayden T., Danny T., Sam T., Brett W., and Alvin Z..
At the meet, the Lions made sure that they were cheering the loudest. Members from the Girls Swim Team showed up to show their support, making sure to keep cheering from right behind the blocks. But that wasn’t the only win the Lions had outside of the water. Lakeside’s Coach, Matt Miller, won the AAA coach of the year award.
Lakeside held many spots on the podium, with their highest being a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and a second and fourth place in the 100 breaststroke, by Jerry and Alvin. Other highlights include Ayden and Ulee getting 6th and 8th in the 200 freestyle, Danny and Ben racing to 4th and 5th in the 200 individual medley, Alvin and Ayden sprinting to 3rd and 6th in 100 butterfly, and Ulee and Ben claiming 5th and 6th in the 500 freestyle with a bow.
Overall, the Lions had an amazing meet. They kept up a powerful spirit and had many swimmers in top 8 for each event, which helped Lakeside score enough points to swim into second place. Next year, with most of the swimmers coming back, we can hope for another wonderful meet! Once again, congratulations to the Lakeside Boys 2022-2023 Swim Team, along with our wonderful coaches, Mr. Miller and Mr. Sjoberg!
