Art is a popular hobby for many people. But the debate continues—what is actually considered art? When you hear the word “art”, you probably think of painting or drawing. But there are so many other forms of art. Some people say that poetry, music, and dance are art, but others disagree. In this article, we’ll answer the lingering question…what does it mean to make art?
First off, art is often tied to creating. However, “create” could mean anything from coding and inventing to writing stories and music. Of course, those could also be art. Art is a very general term and encompasses a wide range of activities. So, if we narrow it down, what would that include? Does all art need to be associated with the word “create”? If not, then what else is art?
So far, all we’ve done is discover more questions. But at least we are getting deeper into this conversation and closer to our answer. Art forms (some of which are questionable) include material and nonmaterial things. Where does the line fall, or is there even one at all? Some people do not consider dance, music, and writing as art. One of the dictionary definitions of art is “the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance.” Some people, however, still do not think that performing arts are really forms of art.
If people think differently about this, then how are we supposed to define the answer to our questions? Don’t worry, I won’t leave you without an answer. There is another dictionary definition of art—“the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” This definition emphasizes the side of art which is to express yourself and let out your imagination. And so far, all of the possible forms of art we have listed do meet this criteria!
