On Wednesday, January 10th, the Seattle Seahawks announced that Pete Carroll would not be continuing as coach of the Seattle Seahawks in 2024. At a 1 pm press conference in Renton, the team chair announced that, “After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor. Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history. … His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward.”
Pete Carroll had a successful career with the Seahawks, leading them to their first-ever Super Bowl victory in 2014, and making the playoffs in 10 of his 14 coaching seasons. He currently is the coach with the most wins in Seahawks history.
Carroll’s retirement has been greeted with a lot of surprise from the public. Questions have arisen about the reasons behind his retirement. Carroll told Seattle Sports 710 AM before his retirement, "I plan to be coaching this team. I told you that I love these guys, and that’s what I would like to be doing and see how far I go. I’m not tired. I’m not worn out. I’m not any of that stuff. I need to do a better job and I need to help my coaches more and we need to do a better job of coaching, and there’s a lot of area for improvement.’’
Mike Macdonald was named the replacement for Pete Carroll. Macdonald was previously the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, and made them into one of the best defenses in the league. He is now the youngest head coach in the NFL at the age of 36.
In conclusion, Pete Carroll was a great coach and led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl victory. He will be greatly missed. His replacement, Mike Macdonald, will hope to take the Seahawks back to the Super Bowl. But Carroll will be remembered as one of the greatest coaches of all time.
