We all remember math class. The class where it is impossible to get an A, impossible to finish the homework given every single day. The stress of studying for a big test and the stress of taking a retake. It seems horrible compared to classes such as English or even Study Hall, right?
Even though math seems horrible, it still teaches you important skills. Math teaches you how to solve problems. Usually, in a good math class, the teacher gives you simple examples so you learn how to do them. For example, 2x+4=8 is an easy starting problem. But then, the teacher throws a curveball! A complicated problem that you have no idea how to even start to solve. So, you think back to the simpler examples and realize the problem is trivial. Math teaches you how to attack a problem from the roots not from the top; it teaches you how to think outside the box.
Math is also useful for jobs. According to medium.com, 92% of STEM workers need a high school education in math, and 67% need to use college-level math daily. This means that with it, you will be able to work at more jobs that you couldn’t have done without it. This means more options, which is always good.
Additionally, math teaches you how to study. Hard math tests show us that we need to study to pass them. Then, over time, we learn how to effectively study. By building these skills early on, we can make mistakes now, and later, and when it matters, and study effectively.
Finally, math is just fun. We all know the feeling of solving a problem that you have been stumped on for a while. It feels great! Then you can look back to see what you did to get that answer and help others solve it too.
Even though we think of math class as homework-filled and stressful, it can still have many upsides. Hopefully, through this article, I was able to show you that math is a fun, useful class that will help you throughout your life. So next time you come to math class, make sure to remember what that class is teaching you.
