American Born Chinese explores the theme of identity and culture through the classic fable of the monkey king and a contemporary story of a Chinese-American high schooler. This assignment serves as a way for me to achieve the dimensions of Intelligent and Communicative. Through the graphic novel, I gain a deeper understanding of how identity and culture significantly affect one another. Writing the literary analysis allows me to transfer this understanding and connect them to a real-life context. Therefore, the whole lesson experience gives me more insight into the global understanding of identity while also increasing my written communication skills.
To achieve the dimension of being open-minded and communicative, I effectively elaborate and mapped the theme and message I intended to deliver towards my reader through my feature article. As I had a chance to interview my family members, I gained many perspectives and their collective thoughts on confronting the unfamiliar pandemic isolation, personal discoveries of yearning for connection and as a time of resilience and uncertainty, and simply getting a better understanding of our role as a community and as an individual.
