Students will develop their skills that are exercised in packaging design practice. Throughout this program, students will have various learning experiences, such as, packaging analysis, packaging, sketching, client searching.
To apply their skills and understanding, students are going to choose a packaging, be it an existing one or their own design, and create a design that represents the brand.
“Carry all your goods” is the concept for the new packaging.
Using this concept, we developed a new packaging which could carry your foods and drinks with little to no risk of spilling.
The reason for the change behind our packaging was because the designer of the packaging became annoyed with having to carry the drink and food separately.
She made this design so that she no longer had to carry her food and drink separately, and she made sure that the possibility of the drink spilling would be little to none.
Between the new and old design there are obvious improvements
The significant one would be the pocket for utensils and the cup holders. Those are the two elements that make up the new design.
We hope that you, dear customers, would find the new design to be useful and more efficient.
This design would also help the earth by reducing the usage of packaging.
Less packaging means less waste.
This program focuses on developing students' understanding of the design cycle as a tool for problem solving.
Through re-designing the visual merchandising display of the chosen store, Students will develop their technical skills and critical thinking that will enable them to research and analyze the findings in order to develop their solution; develop accurate and detailed plan, specification, and success criteria; create digital or analog two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) product or design; and test their chosen method and impact, as well as to plan for improving their solution.
Based on the observation of the Crocs’ outlet, I discovered things that could be improved, such as, too packed and dull looking racks, boring dry vibes, unattractive use of colors and bad layout.
The proposed solution would be to Make it more into a fun concept. I see that my first sketch has a bit too messy rack placing so I decided to make this second sketch have the middle racks aligned. Therefore it should have allowed more space for customers to walk by. I also made the wall display more interesting and less dull.
To make it more interesting. I designed the wall racks display into four separate displays and made two sided middle racks.
I discovered a few problems in Tumi outlet (Pondok Indah mall 2), such as :
The product placement is very cluttered. As you enter the store it is hard to identify the different types of products.
The lighting of the outlet is very bright that seemed to distracts the customers from having a good shopping experience.
Therefore, in my concept I tries to create a more family friendly design by arranging the sitting area in the corner and changing the lighting configuration.
I have found out that the store has various things that we could improve upon, such as:
The lighting is too strong / bright
The placement and size ratio of the front logo is too dominant
Insufficient showcases to grab people’s attention
The layout is not efficient.
Therefore in the proposal I try to :
Change the front logo into transparent finish, so it can also function as a display.
Improve the layout, separate the entrance and the exit way so there will be better traffic flow, hence, better shopping experience.
The following are the primary concerns or issues identified in this store (Bath and Body Works):
Lighting - The store lighting was so vibrant and overwhelming that it made it difficult to see things and made us lightheaded.
The Store's Size - The store's size is too small for a store that sells fragrance, soap, lotion, and other similar items.
Product Quantity - The product quantity does not correspond to the size of the store, causing it to be overcrowded.
Proposed solutions would be :
Organizing products by section (sales) and collection.
More space - Increase the size of your store.
Match the quantity of products to the store's size.
Putting the lights only on some area that required > lighting on each section.
The circle in my diorama represents the 'Bath Collection.' As a result, when we walk in, there will be a collection filled there. This will make the store less overwhelming.
Based on my analysis the existing place has a narrow aisle that makes it hard to move around and enjoy the merchandise display. The place is also quite messy.
My proposal of solutions would be :
Widening the aisle
Re-organising the placement of merchandise
Adding an e-catalog feature so that customers do not necessarily have to come inside the store, they can also browse the collection from the comfort of their own house.
Material for the diorama :
Paint : red, yellow, dark grey, light gray, black
Cardboard
Paper, art paper
Plastic folder
Led strip lights
Fabrics
Clay
The main problem that I have observed is that the placement of the merchandise (the clothing) is too dense, jam packed. It is making the customer have a bad shopping experience.
I made the diorama from art supplies, such as, art paper, aluminum foil, glue, ice cream sticks.
I have found out that the layout of the merchandise display is bad and makes the flow inconvenience.
To solve this problem I made a layout that orients on the center of the store. Making the flow in a circular shape and giving a better shopping experience.
The problem with the store space is they put too much items in a small space. It can raise an intimidating, uncomfortable feeling and shopping experience to some people.
The solution I try to offer is to re-organise the flow and merchandise, display placement.
There are few problems that I have found out from the observation :
The place is too crowded
The lighting looks weird and it does not match with the color of the wall.
Too many mannequins for a rather small store.
The solutions that I am proposing would be :
Reorganise the display, such as, put the pants on the display table, place a shelf to put folded clothes, place a sofa for people to sit and wait.
Put a smaller mannequin, adding small decorations.
I feel the entrance of the Gingersnap outlet in Pondok Indah mall is to wide and unattractive to its audience (kids and their parents).
I try to answer this problem by placing a thematic window display. A playful one, by adding cute toys and swings, stars decoration strapped to the ceiling.
I am using clay, cardboard, glue, paint and wooden sticks for the diorama.
I feel that the store layout is a bit boring and outdated. We cannot really get the gaming experience and ambience. Moreover, the poor lighting makes it worse.
The goal of my design is to make the store better looking by fixing the placement of stuff and making the display less boring. In addition heightening the gaming experience for the customer.
The outer area of the store is quite cramped as the only way to walk in and out of the store is through a small gate.
The cashier is placed right beside the area to walk out of the store, which makes it harder for people to walk out as the line for payment is on the same lane to walk out of the store.
The chosen wallpapers and flooring are unattractive to me, because the colors do not quite match the feel they are trying to portray.
The placement of the shelves are quite messy as it would leave small spaces for us to walk through the isles.
The shelves are very stuffed and filled with products that are badly organised
Therefore to solve the problems, my concept emphasis on :
Choosing new wallpapers and flooring
Rearranging placements of the isles
Categorizing products for easier findings
Designing a more attractive entrance
As for the current final design, I made a layout plan. I am planning to use mainly cardboard and Styrofoam for the diorama, as it is the most effective material to work with for my design.
I would like to redesign the front / window layout of Cotton on because it is currently too full and blocking the view from the outside and inside as well.
Therefore, I try to solve the problems by :
Making the window display more comfortable to see and prettier
Making it simpler and elegant.
As of the store still provisioning products from books to pencils and project needs completely, it still lacks attraction to pull wider consumers other than those who already stuck to their store.
Their blocky exterior / old / aged colored
Hazy and disclosed window display
It’s giving less attraction from the outside. It truly is a waste of space of the building and all the potential it has. The dark selection of color from their paints, to window filters has little efficiency to give the people an image of a place they wanna come in.
Ineffective checkout / cashier placement
( clashes with the people entering the store )
When you enter you would like to be greeted with a nice spacious path with a clear view of products you wanna look for. On the other hand, the current design of the Intermedia bookstore unfortunately poorly placed their cashier place right beside the entry of the store which hinders the pathway for people to come on along with the people who are in the queue.
Need re polishing
Despite its changes needed, there are still aspects of the store that could be kept and improved. Such as the structure of the building.
Starting by repolishing the exterior. I will change the whole right part of the building into tall glass windows to give an open and visible look from the outside. In the left part of the building wall, I will utilize the blank wall space on the bottom to have a tiny window display with an awning tent as the roof part for the window for the extra detail. The main lighting will be dependent on the natural sunlight from outside with a beautiful on-budget easy to take care of art installation that hangs on the tall ceiling they have.
The first design layout I have, will have the cashier at the top right corner of the store. This way it won’t block the people who first enter the store, and fix the flow of shopping. As they enter, they will have access to products stored in shelves when first entering, to wavy shelves for a more creative storage space for the products beside the stair which also gives a more spacious pathway.
The first design layout I have, will have the cashier at the top right corner of the store and partially connecting into the right side of the wall, forming an upside down L shape. This way it won’t block the people who first enter the store. As they enter, they will have access to products stored in shelves when first entering, to wavy shelves for a more creative storage space for the products beside the stair which also gives a more spacious pathway.
I prioritize comfort, cleanness, efficiency, and visibility applied both on the exterior, and interior design of the store.
Through this project, I aim to redesign the front display of the store. I will redesign the front display to further introduce its brand, in addition to attracting customers. I think this is an essential makeover for Lulu Wax because:
1. The front appearance displays an unfresh identity
While the brand promotes femininity and youthfulness, the front display portrays the opposite. The store frames an aged painted-pink wall that, Instead, creates a stale identity.
2. The front appearance does not give a welcoming atmosphere
Brands certainly want their store to feel welcoming. That enables more customers to the store. However, Lulu WAX have not given out this atmosphere. The issue here is the doors and lighting. The door seems like it is going to close. Also, the lighting is dim. This portrays that the store is about to close when it is open.
3. The signage
The signage is well-made, absolutely big. However, I wish to create a new signage design that will further represent the store better.
My design :
Repaint the walls
I will repaint the wall to a more vibrant pink. This is to liven the atmosphere of the front display. Along with further representing the brand itself.
Modify the entrance
To create a more ideal entrance, I managed to come up with this idea. I will:
Attach an upper “umbrella” to enhance the feminine identity.
Add light on the sides to lighten up the store at night
I moved the receptionist table to look front instead of the left because this will further create a welcoming ambiance.
I placed plants in front of the store to bring a fresh atmosphere.
I used a glass wall and door to enable customers to see the inside of the store.
Change the signage
To emphasize the brand identity further, I will create the signage to pink and white, the color of the brand, from the wood style while still maintaining the big size of it. Also, I wish to add a light from the inside. That is to make it more recognizable at night.
*I removed the advertisement poster because that creates the impression of a low-quality store when the store represents a middle-high quality.*
I have observed several design flaws within the store that has affected my experience in a negative way.
First of all, one of the inconveniences I have spotted was the lack of space. This affects the overall traversal of the location, and it limits our movement, especially when considering other customers.
Second, the navigation of the location is a bit of an inconvenience. I believe that the best way to place your items in a store is to branch it into multiple areas, instead of placing a certain or specific brand deeper within the store, while passing other brands. Because when different customers are looking for different things, they would need a similar experience navigating the store.
I plan to let the audience have a more open feeling where they are free to go left and right. The flooring is a colored blue as well to give the customer a sense of comfort.
I think the less important or desired ones should be in the back, aside from the cashier.
The problem with the store :
Too much lighting
Too white-ish
Too much stuff that can’t make the customer interested at first
Too narrow
The proposed solution :
I make it have a more aesthetic vibe and make everything look different that can refresh the customer’s taste. For the lighting, I make it more neon ish to be more vibrate
I change the middle row to be more like a box per box full of hand/face accessories and make a space for the customer to walk around. I use light bulb looks like wire rectangular ish
What is the problem with the store ?
The problem is the window display since its current one only has bags covering the whole window display and nothing else and you can even barely look inside the store through the window display so I am changing it.
I Fix this problem by making changes to the window display in order to make it better and attract for customers.
The design of the current window display did not interest me at first because it looks full. There is a big discount sign and two big flowers on the window that blocking the clothing should have the priority to be displayed.
I am going to solve the problem by adding interior decoration, just the right amount so you can still the clothing you want to display clearly.
Adding more colors also makes the overall look more interesting. Plus a nice quote on the side.
The problem with the store :
It is quite messy
uninteresting items, unnecessary stickers that blocks the view of the interior
Through my concept I try to make the store more interesting so it can attract more people to come.
