Note: With Alma, we will now place barcodes in all bound and unbound serial issues / volumes.
At the top of the screen, set your Currently at: location to Carothers Library - Tech Services - Carothers Library.

Go to Acquisitions => Receiving and Invoicing => Receive.
Click on the Continuous tab to see a list of subscriptions with issues to be received.
Under Receiving Settings above, Keep in Department :
Uncheck Keep in Department if you are receiving an issue that does not need physical processing.
Check Keep in Department if you are receiving an issue that needs physical processing (i.e. printed label, property stamp, tattle tape) and select Next Step Physical Processing.
Check Keep in Department if you are receiving an issue that needs to be sent immediately to the bindery and select Next Step Binding.
Find the item you want to receive by filtering by vendor and/or searching by PO-Line number, title, ISSN, or other criteria.
In cases where we receive more than one copy or format of a title (e.g. print and microfilm, Pell and Kingston), double check that you are looking at the correct record.
Double-check the location of the issue to be received in the Locations column. If the location is not correct, click on the link to the PO Line and correct the location there.

Actions => Manage Items to see a list of previously received issues (and then Receive New Items to receive the new issue).
(Or you can go Actions => Receive, but this doesn't allow you to scan previous issues first.)
Note that if there is a Receiving note it will appear on both the Manage Items and Receive screens for your reference.
Keep in Department: Checked or unchecked as per instructions above.
Under Last Received item Details, click Duplicate to copy the details to the New items details section.
Edit the Enumeration and Chronology to match the issue you are about to check in.
Press the Generate button to the right of the Description field to update the description. Check for accuracy and edit by hand as needed. Note: If you need to indicate that the issue is a Special Issue or a Supplement or an Index, you can add that to to the end of the description field, e.g. "v.28:no.2(2015) Supplement."

Check Receiving note for further instructions (e.g. "Theft-strip" or "Label with yr., v." or "Volume & issue number inside back cover").
Set the dropdown menu to Receive and set barcodes and press Go. Place a barcode on the item and enter it in to the item record.

Write the call number on the issue and transit the issue to Circulation for shelving.
Note: Periodical issues do not need to be scanned in at Circulation before being shelved (unless they were kept in the department for processing, then they do).
OR
Place the volume in the queue to be processed.

Note: Government publication serials that are classed as LC (e.g. Economic Indicators, Monthly Labor Review, Occupational Outlook Handbook) are checked in by Govt. Pubs. staff with LC call number and sent to Circulation for shelving. Binding is handled by Acquisitions. (2/2016 ajr)
