Basic processing of government publications
Federal government publications are received by the Govt Pub office from MARCIVE partially processed.
The Govt Pub office:
Stamps the cover of the publications with a "Received" stamp.
Affixes a barcode to the publication.
Affixes a SuDoc call number label to the publication.
The publications are then brought to Processing on a book truck.
Processing students will:
Insert tattle tapes.
Property-stamp the items.
Scan the items to Done in Alma.
Deliver the book truck of publications to Circulation.
Additional processing of government publications
Some government publications require additional processing by the Processing unit, which might include:
Tattle tape
New labels
(In cases where the publications are classified with LC or Swank call numbers; will be shelved in a sub-location of Govt Pub such as Govt Pub Ref or Govt Pub Index; or are in need of relabeling due to error, label wear, or change in location)
Label protectors on hard-bound volumes or volumes with a shiny coated cover.
Binding (e.g. pamphlets)
Property-stamping the top edge
Any government publication requiring more than a theft strip will arrive in the Processing unit with a slip of paper inside with additional processing steps checked off (see image below and attached file).
After processing, the publications will be scanned to Done and then delivered by Processing students to the Circulation Desk for reshelving.
Labels for government publications
Most items will come to us with an instruction slip from the Government Publications staff. If there is no slip, then the item just needs a new label. No further processing needed.
1. Check the title page or instruction slip for full call # including any parts, vols., etc.
2. All letters are in CAPS except for pt., v. bd., etc.
3. Prestamp is always GOVT PUB unless the instruction sheet indicates differently.
4. Call # breaks can only be done after punctuation.
Example:
GOVT PUB
Y4.
B22/3:
R86/
2011
pt. 3
5. Place spine label on the spine 1 inch from the bottom if it fits. If the label does not fit on the spine, place it in the upper left corner of the cover.
