Adding DOI's (general instructions):
As of winter 2017, we will be adding DOI's to original journal articles (only for journals published through DigitalCommons@URI) and theses/dissertations.
Before you add a DOI to the item in Digital Commons, you need to register the DOI and associated metadata (title, author etc.) with CrossRef. This will make the DOI official and create a record in the CrossRef database. You can do this using the CrossRef web deposit form: https://apps.crossref.org/webDeposit/
First enter the journal information and the volume/issue number, and then click on "Add Articles" which will take you to another webform to add an individual article.
Our official DOI prefix is 10.23860 and each DOI should adhere to the designated scheme for the particular journal or ETDs.
Once you're done adding articles, click on the "submit" button which will take you to a login. Here is URI's account info:
Username: unri
Password: rhode_2
Then enter the email address where you want to receive notifications (which will vary depending on who is making the deposit). Crossref will send back an automated email with the subject line "Crossref submission ID xxxx" -- it contains XML that will tell you whether the submission was successful. The important part is this part at the bottom:
<batch_data>
<record_count>6</record_count>
<success_count>6</success_count>
<warning_count>0</warning_count>
<failure_count>0</failure_count>
</batch_data>
If you see any warnings or failures and you're not sure why, you can email Crossref support, support@crossref.org. Once you get confirmation that the DOI's were successfully created, you can go ahead and add them to the "DOI" field in the article in Digital Commons.
