Standing Orders are used primarily for series monographs. Inventory is not created automatically.
It can also be used for memberships and approval plan payments — anything for which you want to keep an open order but for which you do not want inventory created because of irregular billing or irregular inventory (though order without inventory is probably better in these situations.)
