Pockets for CDs and CD-ROMs
We use self-adhesive pockets to attach CD/DVD supplements to the inside back covers of books and bound periodicals.
The Northeast Document Conservation Center confirms that this process is fine, as long as the pockets are made of polyethylene, polypropylene, or polyester and NOT PVC (polyvinylchloride).
1. Simply adhere the CD pocket to the inside back cover of the publication and insert the CD.
2. If the CD is not associated with a publication or if it is not practical to place the CD in its publication, adhere the CD pocket to the inside back cover of a small pamphlet binder.
3. Sometimes a pamphlet or operating instructions come with the CD.
a. If the CD has been placed in a publication, attach one edge of the pamphlet to the inside back cover of the publication using 3M 845 Transparent Scotch Book Tape. Tape the edge front and back. The tape can be cut lengthwise to make narrower pieces.
b. If the CD has been placed in a pamphlet binder, sew the pamphlet in the binder if practical (See Pamphlet Binding), otherwise tape it in as in "a." above.
Pockets for print material
When a map, poster, or other supplementary material comes with a book, we create a pocket using archival-quality envelopes and affix the pocket to the inside back cover of the publication using double-sided archival tape.
1. Cut off the top off the envelope so that the pocket will be about an inch shorter than the height of the back cover of the book.
2. Cut down the right side seam of the envelope about half-way, fold the front side back, and cut along that diagonal line to form a pocket with a full back and angled front.
3. Affix 3M 415 double-sided tape to the back of the envelope and attach it to the inside back cover of the book.
4. Insert the supplementary material.
