Overview
It is the policy of the University of Rhode Island Library to send books in need of repair, whenever possible, to a commercial bindery for rebinding.
However, some material cannot be rebound because pages are too brittle or the gutter of the book is too small, for example.
These items are tied with book tying tape and returned to the shelf.
Materials Required
"This Volume Cannot Be Rebound... Please Retie When Finished Using" labels
3M 845 Transparent Scotch Book Tape, 4" wide, on dispenser
Scissors
Unbleached cotton tying tape, 5/16" wide
Procedure
The bindery techncian makes the determination that a volume cannot be rebound and alerts the technician responsible for processing and mending that it needs to be tied.
The technician responsible for processing and mending proceeds as follows:
In the library system, scan the barcode to locate the item for the volume you are about to tie. Change the status to indicate that the item is on the shelf. [Do this first, because once you tie the book, the barcode will no longer be accessible.]
Locate a "This Volume Cannot Be Rebound... Please Retie When Finished Using" label and affix it to the front cover of the volume with 3M 845 Transparent Scotch Book Tape.
Tie the volume with book tying tape as in the video below.
Record the number of items tied, your initials, and today's date on the Mending Statistics Sheet. Each month, remember to add the total number of items mended in-house to the statistics spreadsheet in Google Drive.
Return the tied volume to Circulation for reshelving.
