Overview
Tip-in is a technique used to replace pages in a book or to attach errata sheets or indexes.
When pages of a book are mutilated or missing, photocopies of the missing pages are obtained by interlibrary loan. It is our current policy to replace missing pages of books but NOT journals.

Policies
Errata sheets - Often when a book is published, or shortly afterwards, mistakes detected by the publisher are printed on a separate errata leaf. These errata sheets should be tipped in as close as possible to the page with the error.
Library Missing Pages (Books) - When it is detected that a page is missing from a book (usually it has been torn out), photocopies of the missing pages can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. We will tip-in up to 10 missing pages of a book. If more than 10 pages are missing, the book should instead be refered to the Collection Management Officer for consideration (replacement or withdrawal).
Library Missing Pages (Journals) - Given staff constraints, in June 2008 we decided that we would no longer tip in missing pages of journal issues. Patrons can use Interlibrary Loan to obtain the entire article whose pages are missing. The chances of the same article with missing pages being requested multiple times is small. Furthermore, the Library has purchased a number of online journal backfiles such as JSTOR, and this trend will continue. Thus replacing missing pages from journals is much less important than in the past.
NEDCC Recommended Procedure
1. Photocopy missing pages obtained by interlibrary loan onto acid-free paper. Photocopy the pages double sided to resemble the pages in a book. Make sure to center the page top to bottom and give yourself enough space at the gutter. (Errata pages will not require this step.)
2. With a needle-nosed tweezers, clean out the gutter of the book where the page was torn out if there is still torn material present.
3. Measure and trim the photocopy at the top to ensure that it is square to the gutter edge. Measure and trim the photocopy at the gutter edge so text is centered correctly when tipped in. DO NOT trim the other two sides. (Errata pages will not require this step.) Repeat this step for each missing page.
4. Place the copy onto a clean piece of waste paper. With another strip of waste paper, cover the detached sheet leaving no more than 1/8" exposed. Dip the brush in water first, then into a small amount of glue placed in the jar lid. Brush the exposed paper with a light coating of PVA.
5. Pick up the detached page and carefully position it glue side down in the book, making sure that the head and gutter line up exactly.
6. Gently rub the page with the bone folder to ensure adhesion. Do not rub too hard or you may tear the paper.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 for each missing page.
8. Insert a strip of waxed paper in case any excess PVA causes the pages to stick together.
9. Close the book and put a weight on top of it (other books work well). Allow to dry.
10. When dry, open the book up and trim the fore edge and tail of each page to the correct size. Do this by placing a cutting mat under the page and and a straight edge on top of the page.
11. Record the number of items tip-ins done, your initials, and today's date on the Mending Statistics Sheet. Each month, remember to add the total number of items mended in-house to the statistics spreadsheet in Google Drive.
