Technically, only print books go on Reserve.
But sometimes a faculty member wants a book for the students in their class, and they'd like an e-book, but if an e-book is not possible, then they want print, and they refer all of this as "On Reserve."
There is a different procedure for print books and e-books for Reserves.
PRINT BOOKS FOR RESERVE
Teaching faculty procedure
Any faculty member or instructor wanting a print book to be placed on Reserve for their class should fill out the Reserve List Request Form.
If the library does not own the book, the Head of Reserves / Access Services will submit the book request to Acquisitions with the following information:
Full bibliographic information (author, title, pub. year, ISBN, etc.).
A notation indicating "RUSH/RESERVE" along with the course code and instructor's name.
Date and signature.
Acquisitions procedure
The order technician will process the order using the fund code F-zza.
In the order record:
Change the location code to ursv.
Receiving note: RUSH/RESERVES; BUS 355; Koray Ozpolat [include course number and instructor name]
Vendor note: Attention: Rush
When the book arrives, the order technician will place a notify slip for Reserves in the book indicating the course and instructor. The book will be sent to Reserves immediately after all processing is completed.
Subject selector procedure
If a faculty member contacts a subject selector requesting that a print book be ordered and placed on Reserve for their class, please direct them to the Reserve List Request Form as detailed above.
The reason for following the procedure above is to make sure that the process goes smoothly and the book ends up on Reserve for the appropriate class without any delay or confusion.
Acquisitions will only accept print book order requests for Reserves from the Head of Reserves / Access Services. Requests coming from other sources will not be processed and will be returned to the selector.
E-BOOKS FOR RESERVE
Teaching faculty procedure
Any faculty member or instructor wanting an e-book to be ordered as course reading for their class should contact their subject selector.
Sometimes, e-books are only available with a limited number of concurrent users (usually 1 or 3). The faculty member or instructor should indicate whether limited concurrent users for the book is acceptable, or if they only want the e-book if it is an unlimited concurrent user model.
Subject selector procedure
The subject selector should contact the order technician responsible for e-book orders, providing the book's bibliographic information, any faculty preferences regarding concurrent users, and the faculty member's name.
Acquisitions procedure
If the book is available as an e-book with the desired number of concurrent users, the order technician will order the e-book using the fund code F-zza and will enter a NOTIFY into the system for the faculty member and the subject selector, so that when the e-book is activated both individuals will receive a system-generated e-mail that the book is available.
If the book is not available as an e-book with the desired number of concurrent users, the order technician will inform the subject selector. The subject selector should notify the faculty member, who can then follow the procedure for requesting a print book for Reserves (above).
