This procedure creates an RSS feed linked to Primo that identifies new items published or added to inventory.
This procedure in Alma works for physical items only. It is based on the Receiving date in the General Information tab of the item record.
1. Create Sets in Alma
The general goal is to identify new, purchased materials of general interest to patrons. By definition, this would exclude periodicals, government publications, Special Collections materials, items added to Reserve, and non-information resources such as laptops, camcorders, etc.
No search strategy will be perfect, but the easiest way to identify this material is to create a list and limit the search to certain locations as follows:
Create four sets:
Find Physical items
Holding => Permanent physical location
Equals
[Enter all locations to include, separated by the Or operator and the library name separated by And.]
Save Query
Set name:
New Books Carothers -- DO NOT DELETE [Kingston]
New Media Carothers -- DO NOT DELETE [MRC]
New Books Pell -- DO NOT DELETE [Pell]
Private [does not matter]
Save
2. Create the RSS Discovery URL
Administration => General Configuration => Configuration Menu => General Configuration => Other Settings
rss_discovery_url => Customize
There are 8 parts to the RSS Discovery URL. For details on each part is, see Configuring RSS in Alma in online help.
URI's RSS Discovery URL:
http://uri-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo_library/libweb/action/dlSearch.do?institution=01URI_INST&vid=01URI&tab=default_tab>&indx=1&bulkSize=10&query=any,contains,@@ALMA_IND@@&search_scope=Books_More
3. Create an RSS Publishing Profile
Resources => Publishing => Publishing Profiles
Add Profile => RSS
Profile name:
New Books List [Kingston]
Carothers New Media [MRC]
Pell New Books List [Pell]
Profile description:

4. Create the six parts of the RSS Feed URL
1. Alma URL — https://na02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/
2. RSS feed URL string provided — /rep/getFile?institution_code=
3. Alma institution code — 01URI_INST
4. RSS feed URL string provided — &file=
5. RSS feed name as defined in the RSS publishing profile — new_books_list
6. RSS feed URL string provided — &type=RSS
RSS Feed URL :
https://na02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/rep/getFile?institution_code=01URI_INST&file=new_books_list&type=RSS
5. Verify that there is data for the feed
Admin => Manage Sets
Locate Physical Item search for New Books List (all branches)
Actions => Results
View results and verify that there are items in the list that were received within the last x number of days.
6. See that the RSS publishing profile runs
Resources => Publishing => Publishing Profiles
Locate New Books List
Actions => Run
Administration => Manage Jobs => Monitor Jobs
Completed Tab
Filter: Publishing
Confirm that job has Status Completed Successfully.
Actions => Report
Records processed: [see number of records added to RSS feed]
7. Use the RSS feed URL to view the new records
Paste the RSS feed URL in a browser.
Link the RSS feed from the New Books link on the Library website.
https://na02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/rep/getFile?institution_code=01URI_INST&file=new_books_list&type=RSS [Kingston]
https://na02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/rep/getFile?institution_code=01URI_INST&file=mrc_new_items&type=RSS [MRC]
https://na02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/rep/getFile?institution_code=01URI_INST&file=pell_new_books&type=RSS [Pell]
Note: Internet Explorer fully supports RSS. Firefox offers some support, and Chrome does not support RSS at all. To use RSS with a browser other than IE, consult the help for that browser to find an add-on.
The RSS feed URL will open a browser page that contains the list of new books.
When you click on the link for one of the records in the RSS feed results list, the item opens in Primo.
Currently the books appear in random order; having the books appear in chronological order by receiving date is a pending development.
8. Display the RSS feed using LibGuides
Run RSS feed through feedburner first at https://feedburner.google.com/. This requires a Google account (non-URI affiliated).
This produces the link that we put in the LibGuides tabs. For example, here is the link we put in the first LibGuide tab:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/urilibraries/newbookscarothers
