852 Field Indicator and Subfield Definitions
Indicator 1 : Indicates the classification or shelving scheme used.
0 = Library of Congress classification [pulls from 050 field in bib]
1 = Dewey Decimal [pulls from 082 field in bib]
3 = Superintendent of Documents classification [pulls from 086 field in bib]
8 = Other scheme [pulls from 09X / 099 field in bib, if present]
Indicator 2 : Indicates whether an item is shelved under a primary or alternative numbering scheme
Blank = No information provided
|b : Contains Alma library code.
|c : Contains Alma location.
|h : Contains LC call number classification part.
If there are two Cutters, |h contains the first Cutter with decimal point but no space, e.g. |h VA65.B54 |i B52 1972. See https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/050.html and
https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd050.html
For SuDoc and "other" call numbers, contains entire call number.
|i : Contains LC call number item part; goes before the LAST cutter number in an LC call number.
If there is one Cutter, include a decimal point, e.g. |h DD259.4 |i .B527 1973. See https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/050.html and https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd050.html
If there are two Cutters, do not include a decimal point, e.g. |h VA65.B54 |i B52 1972. See https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/050.html and
https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd050.html
Note: in our migration, |i ( |b ) was not carried over, therefore all of our holdings records have the complete call number in the |h.
Note that volume information is not indicated in the 852. Multiple volumes in an encyclopedia, for example, will be indicated at the item level in the item record.
Example of a MARC Holdings Record for a Serial (852 and 866 fields)
The 852 field contains the library, location, and call number. See explanation of indicators and subfields above.
The 866 field is a textual field used for display of holdings.

866 Field Indicator and Subfield Definitions
Indicator 1 : Indicates the field encoding level.
Blank = No information provided
Indicator 2 : Type of notation
0 = Non-standard
1 = ANSI/NISO Z39.71 or ISO 10324
2 = ANSI Z39.42
|a : Contains holdings statement as a textual string. Includes captions, enumeration data, and chronology data.
|x : Contains nonpublic note.
|z : Contains public note, for example to record missing issues or numbering irregularities.
Cleanup
With the migration to Alma, the 852 contains non-public notes in the |x that migrated from the Sierra holdings record.
The 866 contains missing issues in |a when they should be in |z.
Therefore, some content in the 852 |x should be deleted, and other content should be moved.
Some content in 866 |a should be moved to 866 |z.
See examples of how to clean records below.
