Unbinding Temp-Bound Journals
The Serials Unit owns an obsolete machine previously used to temp-bind incomplete volumes. (We now send incomplete volumes to the bindery and re-bind them at a later time if missing issues show up.)
However, we still need to use the machine to remove the vinyl covers from volumes that were previously temp-bound.
To remove the covers, heat the machine and place the temp-bound volume in it. When the glue softens, pull the journal issues from the vinyl cover.

On April 11, 1995, we received a letter from GBC stating that they were unable to renew our GBC Equipment Maintenance Agreement. "Time has rendered your machine obsolete and sufficient parts will soon be unavailable."
We used to order 200 each: vinyl covers of thickness 3/4" (black), 1" (burgundy), 1 1/4" (navy), 1 1/2" (hunter green), and 1 3/4". Front was 10 mil clear vinyl, and back was "premium leatherette."
The last time we ordered them was July 2001. At that time, 1,000 covers of assorted sizes cost $2,680 ($2.68 each).
