What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
A first-generation college graduate to me means someone who succeeded somewhere with minimal support. I do not mean that families are not supportive of first-gen students, but our families didn't always know how to support us since they never experienced college. College is much more difficult when nobody knows what to look for, how to apply, and what major is best. I am proud of every first-generation student who was able to persevere and graduate.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
My proudest moment at UCSD was actually very recent. I have participated on the Dancesport team for all 4 years and even while I was studying abroad I continued to assist the team. During my fourth year I was the president of my team. The UCSD Sports Clubs program recognized me as this year's outstanding leadership for the entire program. I am very proud of the award and the work I was able to do with my team.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I am thankful for the Women in Business community for teaching me about my major and providing me with a group of supportive women. I truly believe that I would have dropped out of college if it weren't for the friends I made along the way who were able to help me through the rough spots. My friend Kenna has been with me since week 1 freshmen year when we met at a tennis open practice and continues to support me to this day, she is the type of person I hope everyone has in their lives.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
Mary McKay (MGT166) taught me about leadership and I think it's thanks to her that I received an outstanding leadership award. McKay's class was also the only one where I enjoyed every single reading. Nico Ravanilla (INTL 190) inspired me to think about the rest of the world and try to make a difference. He was also a great teacher and I looked forward to each 3 hour long session.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
I have accepted an offer at LPL Financial in La Jolla so I will be working there for the short-term future. I hope to eventually get a job at a global corporation and travel around the world.
