What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
As immigrants, my parent came to the United States in search of a better life. They worked in the agricultural industry picking grapes under the scorching sun just so my siblings and I could have the chance to pursue higher education, something that we wouldn't be able to do in Mexico. Being the first in my family to graduate means that all their efforts and sacrifices did not go to waste.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
My proudest moment is finally graduating. There were many times when I didn't believe I would make it at UCSD. I questioned my liabilities and resilience countless time, but with the support of my family, friends and faculty, I am finally graduating.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
To my family and friends who have supported me throughout my time at UCSD, I want to thank you for being a constant support system during some of my most challenging yet rewarding years. Thank you to my family for always encouraging me to push forward and follow my dreams at my own pace. To my SE community, thank you for making me feel like a true engineer. You all are the real reason why I am graduating with an SE degree.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
I want to thank Professor Lelli Van Den Einde from the SE department for being a constant support throughout my time at UCSD. Thank you for believing in my abilities as an engineer when I didn't even believe in myself. I also want to thank Professor Justin de Leon from the Ethnic Studies department for always validating my feelings and struggles. Thank you for always willing to listen and offer words of encouragement when I needed them the most. Your support kept me sane during some very difficult times.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
After graduating I plan to go work in the industry. However, I would eventually like to go into the Education field and teach.
