What does being a First-Generation College Graduate mean to you?
It means taking advantage of the opportunities that my mom was not able to get because she was focused on providing for me. It also means being grateful for the sacrifice and the path of hard work that my mom labored for.
What is your proudest moment from your time at UCSD?
I think there have been many times when UCSD has been mentioned in talking with people or in articles and I instantly feel so thankful that I was able to attend this great university. I know that UCSD has excelled in many ways and I am proud that I could be a part of its growth.
Who are the family members, friends or loved ones who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
To my mom, thank you for being a powerhouse and working hard for me to be able to accomplish this.
To my friends, thanks for putting up with my shenanigans and for keeping me sane when school was kicking my butt. I probably did not show it, but y'all def kept the stress level down.
To my church fam, thanks for encouraging me in Christ. These four years were years of growth and it was a blessing to have your constant love and exhortation in the word of God.
Who are the staff, faculty or mentors who have been most influential throughout your college journey? Are there any words of gratitude you would like to share with them?
One professor that stands out to me would be Professor Brian Leigh. I would like to thank him for his advice and motivation when I was figuring out what I wanted to do for a career. His encouragement and time allowed me to ask questions and get valuable input which helped me land an internship that I have enjoyed being a part of. He is an awesome person and professor and I am super thankful that I was able to be a part of his course.
What do you plan or hope to do after graduating?
For a few months I hope to serve at an organization in Guatemala to tutor underprivileged children in English and Science. In the long-term I also plan to return to graduate school and pursue a higher education in chemistry. In the meantime, I would love to work in the pharmaceutical industry in San Diego.
